Loyalty Card Program Types and Benefits

There are several types of loyalty card programs that can be implemented at the retail level.

The traditional VIP or Preferred Customer program offers discounts for predetermined items. The items are promoted throughout the store, and a discount is given at the point of sale to customers who present their loyalty card to the cashier. These programs are similar to traditional coupons, but they require less effort for both retailers and customers, help track consumer buying patterns, and provide instant gratification to the consumer.

Another type of loyalty program is Points Based. This program type accumulates points based on the dollar value of the customer's historical purchases. After a certain number of points are reached, consumers can choose to redeem points for a reward. The reward is determined by the retailer. Examples include free beverage, 5% off next purchase, etc. The consumer may also choose to continue adding points to earn eligibility for a bigger reward. When a reward is redeemed, the customer's point balance is deducted accordingly. The customer's point balance is printed on the customer receipt after each transaction for the customer's reference. Usually, the available rewards are communicated to the customer through traditional methods such as membership newsletters, advertising, reference cards, etc. To keep things simple, often rewards are separated into "Level 1," "Level 2, "Level 3" etc. with multiple rewards of similar value available within each reward category.

A third type of program provides Point of Sale Incentives through a combination of analyzing the customer's past purchase activity and the customer's most recent purchase. For example, if the customer is buying a particular stock keeping unit (SKU), the transaction system could offer an incentive on the customer's receipt to buy an associated item at a discount. The cashier or sales representative may also have the flexibility to "push" a particular incentive to the customer based on a discussion and an anticipation of a future sale. This type of loyalty program generally requires more back end configuration.

A plastic card loyalty program provides merchants the opportunity capture data points about a particular customer's purchase activity, analyze the data, and incent the customer at or near the point of sale. Loyalty programs increase sales, improve customer relations, lengthen relationships, provide valuable data mining opportunities, and ultimately improve the bottom line.

Tips for Loyalty Card Programs

  • If you have only one store location, determine if your Point of Sale software supports loyalty or frequent guest functionality. You may be able to implement a loyalty/gift card program without using a transaction processor. If you have more than one store and your application supports real time or frequent data updates, you may also be able implement without a transaction processor.

  • If you have multiple store locations or if your POS software does not support loyalty/gift functionality, you can implement a program using credit card terminals and a transaction processor. A special application is loaded on the terminals to support the loyalty/gift portion of the transaction. You may be able to use your existing terminals, or new terminals may be required.

  • Consider implementing a gift card program at the same time as your loyalty card program. Due to the similarity of infrastructure and steps involved, you will save time and reduce your overall effort. Ordering more cards may also reduce your per card price.
